Northampton University Podiatry Plant Room Upgrade
We were approached by Northampton University to upgrade the plant room for their Podiatry department that is located at Northampton General Hospital. The existing system consisted of two old, inefficient floor-standing gas boilers that needed replacing. They were both faulty and the parts were no longer required which caused issues with the operation of the clinic.

The Challenge
The primary challengewas to design and install a new heating system that would not only meet the department’s heating requirements but also improve energy efficiency and reduce the client’s carbon footprint. The system needed to be reliable, cost-effective and sustainable in the long term.
The Solution
After careful consideration, the PJH Co team proposed a hybrid heating system that incorporated a gas boiler and a commercial air source heat pump. The specific components of the system included:
- Worcester Bosch Condense 7000 WP (50 – 145kW) gas boiler
- Worcester Bosch Compress 3000 AWP air to water heat pump
- Worcester controls with an outdoor weather compensator
This combination allows the system to prioritise heating the property using the renewable energy source (the air source heat pump) while the gas boiler provides additional heat when necessary.
The outdoor weather compensator is a crucial component of the system too, as it enables the heating to adjust according to the temperature outside. This ensures the system operates at optimal efficiency, reducing energy waste and costs.
The Result
By installing this state-of-the-art hybrid heating system, PJH Co has helped Northampton Hospital’s Podiatry department significantly improve its energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.
